Hassle-Free Holidays

With New Year Round The Corner, Can Vacations Be Far Behind? Make Sure Everything Is In Place And Enjoy A Tension-Free Break

It’s time again for corporates to take a break from their hectic schedules and go off on a vacation with their families. There may be a lot of excitement building up, but as hotshots, it is also your responsibility to ensure that you don’t leave behind any loose ends. Holidays also bring in the requirement to designate job and have a very systematic reporting. “Planning, organising, staffing, directing, and controlling upcoming business interactions will solve all problems,” says K Shyaam Sunder, chief knowledge officer, Ramco Systems. This should not be difficult for corporates today. “The Blackberry generation believes in multitasking as that is the need of the hour,” says Rahul Todi, MD, Bengal Shrachi. The first thing that you must see to is inform your colleagues about the holiday schedule. “This helps the team schedule your meetings and appointments accordingly. Ensure there are no important deadlines during your vacation,” says Amit Ladsaria, director, Turtle Limited. “I ensure that there are no logical gaps between my peers through clear understanding and wave length matching. Business unit heads have defined roles to act in accordance with the requirements of clients and employees,” says Rohit Mahajan, founder and MD, Saviance Technologies. Read more

Saviance Tech chalks out expansion plans
IT consultancy and cloud software solutions company Saviance Technologies is gearing up to strengthen its base in India, while increasing its business in the markets abroad. “We are definitely looking at global expansion, but not diversification,” its Founder and Managing Director, Mr Rohit Mahajan, told Business Line. The company already has a presence in the US. It is now looking to enter other geographies and establish a global footprint. He conceded that the company was bullish on India and looking to expand its footprint in Europe as well. Saviance recently opened an office in Australia and is in the process of venturing into Brazil, in about a month's time.

By mid-2011, the company plans to establish its base in Singapore and Japan too, Mr Mahajan said. Asked how he proposed to go about the global expansion plans, Mr Mahajan said, “We will either go direct or take the joint venture route.” He did not rule out the inorganic route in the expansion/ growth process. “We will be looking at acquisitions in 2011, in the markets that we are already present,” he said and hinted that the company has identified a couple of firms in the US for possible take-over. “We are waiting for the appropriate time,” he said. Saviance is eyeing small and medium-sized companies worth $5 million to $10 million. Read more

Story Angle - Human Resources – Employees Going That Extra Mile at Work
Quoted - Mr. Rohit Mahajan, MD, Saviance Technologies

How much can you stretch?
Why do you like to go that extra mile at work? To get that compensatory holiday, a salary hike, a bigger managerial role... or just free vegetable sandwiches and pizzas?
Monday, December 20, 2010 2:33:49 PM

Sangini Pathak, 42, spent 14 hours at office most days until her company decided that employees would not be allowed to work for more than the stipulated eight hours. The company was of the view that if employees were to maintain a healthy work-life balance, they should not be seen overstretching themselves at work. Pathak, a workaholic, was setting a wrong precedent. They could, however, not change her or her work style. Two days after the order was passed, she was seen working beyond set hours inside her car parked in the office basement. Two months later, she was asked to leave.

Do you have hard work built into your DNA? Do you love burning the midnight oil? If the answers to these questions are yes, ask yourself what propels you to do it — a free meal or a few extra bucks for the hours spent, a promotion after 12 months or a plain vanilla compensatory off during the week?

Baby boomers would be seen and are still seen sitting in office as long as the boss calls it a day. The younger generation works differently. For them, it is not about the number of hours they spend at work, it is all about efficient quality work. “Today's generation is outcome-based. For them, delivering the project on time is what is important. They are more concerned about delivering results. It is all about working smart and being conscious about a work life balance,” points out Dhiren Shantilal, senior VP, APAC, Kelly Services. Read more

Story Angle - Feature on a Fictional Character as an Inspiration from a Movie / Book / Animation
Quoted - Subhashish Bharuka, Manager – Corporate Communications

From Fiction to Reality…
Movies And Books Are Great Entertainers, As They Help Us Unwind Or In Some Cases, Educate Us On New Topics. We All Have A Favourite Movie Or Book That We Keep Going Back To For Inspiration Or The Memories It Invokes. Vinnie Bhadra Asks India Inc Honchos To Name Their Favourite Fictional Character From A Book Or Movie That Has Taught Them A Lesson Or Two In Leadership And Team Management

There is a thin line between fiction and reality and all of us, since childhood, have at least one if not more dear-to-the-heart fictional character from a book or movie that has had an impact on us, in a positive way. Literature and the art of movie making have long since been proven to have a direct effect on the way an individual conducts himself/herself in life. As young adults, we read books with characters, some of which touch our lives and stick with us, even as grown working professionals.

Subhashish Bharuka
Manager-corporate communications, Saviance Technologies Pvt Ltd Character: Carl Braschear Movie: Men of Honor

The character truly inspired me to repeatedly strive to succeed in the most gruelling situations in life. Failures in life must be overcome and dealt with a blinding force guiding the inner soul to reach out for the stars. Carl Braschear was determined to become the first ever black scuba diver who he does become after facing hardships and humiliation, amongst a racist white scuba divers group in the US Navy. It’s a tale of a turbulent life and ultimately, achieving triumph. Carl’s character has been an absolute inspiration as being a true leader means you command respect from your followers and not demand. External factors may be disturbing as well as challenging; however, this character has made me realise never to lose faith in self and make every possible effort to reach the goal. It’s truly enduring when I take each step with confidence while climbing the ladder of life whilst overcoming the hindrances blocking my path towards success. Read more

Story Angle - HR – Common Channels of Communication between Senior, Middle & Junior Level Employees
Quoted - Mr. Rohit Mahajan, MD, Saviance Technologies
The channel is now open

If in an organization, the senior, middle and junior level employees are encouraged to follow common channels of communication with each other, not only individual productivity, but also organizational productivity is assured.

In a real corporate scenario, if a junior level employee has to address a problem that he/she is facing, he/she will have to approach their immediate seniors and from there on, it shall be decided if it can be taken forward. But in an ideal corporate scenario, this can be tweaked a little by making sure that the junior level employee knows that he/she has the option of speaking with their higher authorities without hesitation. “A regular cross-functional interaction helps in direct understanding of work expectations, immediate resolution of conflicts, understanding peer work culture and building a camaraderie and healthy relationship between colleagues and multiple levels,” says Abhay Valsangkar, chief administrative officer, Avaya India.
