Keep your college senior in good humour, never mind he made you duck-walk down the corridor. He may play a vital role in your career. Alumni activity has burgeoned over the last few years and it is not just about stirring nostalgia. Former students help current ones get a headstart in their respective professions, offer career advice and internships. The Hindu Old Students’ Association is itself fairly old, but started taking active interest in college activities two to three years ago. Their efforts have paid off.“The number of companies visiting the campus has risen since we started working with the placement cell,” says secretary Ravi Burman. “This year, we’re expecting it to increase by 20-25 per cent.” The association has 1, 800 life members. “Now, others are waking up too,” he says. IT consultancy, Saviance Technologies, launched Viburnix a year and half ago. It provides customised sites – like social networking ones with forums, albums, blogs, shop, chat – for alumni associations. “At least 40% of the top 100 business schools have alumni engagement activities. Half of them have in-house pages,” says Kaushik Bellani, CEO, Saviance. “The placements and events sections are most popular on our sites. Alumni groups are a great source for lateral hiring,” says Bellani. Read more

Fake Resume Alert!

Imagine hiring an individual with impeccable credentials only to find that they are all fake, several months after he/she has been on the job. Several times, such individuals go undiscovered for long durations, much to the detriment of organizations. Though HR professionals are aware of this problem, it is difficult to go through every resume that comes to the desk with a magnifying glass. However, there are certainly some solutions at hand. Organizations have already recognized the menace that fake resumes are posing. "Indian IT firms are taking stringent measures against those who indulge in "padding" or fudging their resumes. Fake resume account to nearly 10-15% per cent of all resumes in the market place. Resumes are faked in three major areas: with reference to skills, technical knowledge and work experience, salary, designation and qualification and references," says Rajiv Tarafdar, VP, IT Staffing, Saviance Technologies. Having worked in the US for around 13 years, I wanted to start my first venture into the IT consulting sector. I got inspiration from my maternal side who are leaders in sporting goods manufacturing and exporting from India. With my wife's support and growing opportunity in the IT consultancy space in the US, I launched Software Folks Inc. in 1999 in New Jersey. Following the success of US and India (Saviance Technologies), we launched our office in the United Kingdom in 2009. The most important mantra for success is to listen closely to your customers' requirements and work closely with them to meet their business objectives. Also, we concentrate on going beyond the ordinary in customer support and build long-term relationships with our valued customers. One of the biggest challenges I have faced with the running of the company is to make my employees understand office politics will not be tolerated. It is also difficult to drive accountability which can only be achieved through setting up of targets and expected results from each employee beforehand. Riding on the success of the existing offices, the company is all set for the next level of global expansion. We are looking at business opportunities in Australia, Singapore, Japan, Middle East and Brazil.

Connect with Alma M@ter

By next year, the Faculty of Management Studies in New Delhi hopes to have 10,000 members registered with its alumni association. “Over 11,000 people have graduated from FMS. Of this more than 5,500 are already registered — that's 50 per cent on the alumni network,” says management professor Dr M.L. Singla, the driving force behind the alumni association that the institute supports. Dr Singla says that it has become easier to round up some of the missing alumni members of the 57-year-old institute and bring them closer to the alma mater, thanks to e-networking on the institute's Web-based alumni platform. As many a former student has found out, a lot can happen over the FMS alumni Web site. Apart from usual alumni stuff such as finding batchmates, getting event updates and so on, members can chat with each other, thanks to social networking interfaces, post blogs, and even look for employees or find jobs. Budget 2011 should increase tax savings under Section 80C to Rs 3 lakhs

So yet another budget and therefore yet another set of expectations. Obviously at an individuals' level personal tax rates matter the most followed by the corporates who would keep an eye on the corporate tax rates & associated tax rebates or benefits for their respective sectors. The budget should be looked upon with a much larger perspective in terms of expected GDP rate at around 8-9%. Governments' focus would always be on regional balanced development, coupled with investment & expenditure in priority sectors like infrastructure, education, employment as well as reducing its own expenditure keeping the various rebates & subsidies in balance.

ESOPs – The next in employee retention
Have you ever asked yourself this question – “What is it that will make my employees stick to me? In a world ruled by free choice, why would your employees not become a target of talent poaching or simply just moving away from your brand to try working in a different, more challenging environment? While you can’t stop your employees from taking those decisions, you can make sure that such decisions become more difficult for them. You can give them offers that they just can’t refuse. If you value your company high enough and trust your brand to do wonders in future, give your trusted employees a stake in the company. Part with your equity through employee stock options (ESOPs) and you will see how they reciprocate your trust too.

Alumni Relations: Are you in touch with your ex-employees?

Imagine meeting that prospective client you have been striving to crack a deal with at your school’s alumni meet and realising he was your senior back then! Or wouldn’t it be great if during an ex-employer alumni meeting, your ex-boss proposes a lucrative job offer – an opportunity better than the current one you are pursuing. How weird would it be to find out during a college reunion that your junior batchmate is vying to work with you – a possible prospect according to you as you have an opening in your team? So, if you thought alumni relationships were just about ‘staying in touch’ with your alma mater, post-graduate institution or ex-employer, think again!

Sporting spirit: Experiences in Schools and College Shaped Rohit Mahajan’s Personality in a Positive Manner

School and college was a lot of fun. My father was in the Indian Army so I had to change schools every few years. I started with St Josephs in Dehradun, APS in DK Delhi and then attended several KVs till 12th (Secunderabad, Patiala, Mhow).

I remember winning many medals in various field and track events. The Army schools and stations had very good sports facilities and I learnt squash, tennis, badminton, TT, basketball, field hockey, football, basketball, swimming, billiards, rifle shooting etc. I was also interested in Quiz. I was the leader of a School House which made it necessary for me to interact with peers and juniors on a regular basis. I learnt to handle the responsibilities that came with it. In college too, I was quite active in various sports, cultural and professional activities.

What I still remember from my high school days was participating in the 27th National Shooting Championships and the thrill of getting world-class equipment like rifle, telescope and coaching from top guns in the Indian Army. They allowed us to take high-powered rifles to the shooting ranges and gave us a lot of ammunition to practice with. I also remember getting my yellow belt in Karate because I had to go through a gruelling regimen and disciplined schedule for many months and the instructor was quite a taskmaster.  From college, I remember the various cultural festivals we went to and winning quiz competitions. As the president of the IEEE Society, I remember organising inter-college seminars and also raising money from the industry for the events. Read more
